TOPIC: Need Advice on Home Automation Installation

Need Advice on Home Automation Installation 11 months 2 weeks ago #358512

I'm finally taking the plunge and want to automate my 3-bedroom house, but I'm completely overwhelmed by where to start. I've been researching different systems like Alexa, Google Home, and some proprietary platforms, but I'm not sure which direction to go.

My main concerns are compatibility and future-proofing. I don't want to invest thousands only to find out my devices don't talk to each other or become obsolete in two years. I'm looking at lighting, thermostat, security cameras, and door locks initially.

Should I hire a home automation company to handle everything, or is this something I can DIY? I'm reasonably tech-savvy but don't have experience with networking or electrical work. I've heard horror stories about failed DIY installations that ended up costing more to fix than professional installation would have cost initially.

Also, what's a reasonable budget for a mid-sized home? I've seen quotes ranging from $3,000 to $15,000 and I'm not sure what's fair. Are there specific certifications or qualifications I should look for when vetting installers?
Any recommendations would be appreciated. I'm in the Northeast US if that matters for local suggestions. Thanks in advance for any guidance!
